Our CEO Katherine Wells recently spoke with the team at CanvasRebel where she discussed what drove her to launch Serenity Engage and how the company is on a mission to connect the entire senior care ecosystem.

Below is an excerpt of the conversation. Click here to read the full interview!

Katherine, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the most important things we can do as business owners is ensure that our customers feel appreciated. What’s something you’ve done or seen a business owner do to help a customer feel valued?

The heart of Serenity is connection. We are constantly encouraging those within the Serenity community to use our platform to better communicate with each other and highlight accomplishments both big and small. We send simple “thank you” and “what a cool thing you just did” messages in the app. People want to, and should be, seen.

Many care communities within the app have taken this similar approach to highlight caregivers and other key staff. As the unsung heroes of senior care, caregivers truly deserve every recognition, and it is so impactful when a community recognizes a caregiver for the work they did, especially by using Serenity.

We’re on a mission to connect the entire senior care ecosystem and these small moments of connection show that we are making a difference both for individual caregivers and the community at large.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

My background paved the road to the creation of Serenity Engage. I had worked at startups much of my career, though I never thought of myself as an entrepreneur.

In November 2016, I found myself in a position all too familiar to many people with elderly parents. My mother with Alzheimer’s was being cared for in a memory care community, while my father was in assisted living.

I was the primary family care coordinator for both of my parents, juggling 37 different providers who didn’t talk with each other, and largely ignored me. Yet I was directing the spend of a substantial economic spend on their services. As a 25+ year software executive, I knew I could solve this problem. Caring for my parents both inspired me to start my company three years later and get more involved in creating a future we all want to live in.

Thus Serenity Engage was born.

Serenity Engage is the go-to platform connecting the entire senior care ecosystem to improve the lives of older adults and those who love and care for them. With consistent, collaborative continuity of communication, the streamlined HIPAA-compliant platform brings an experience of simplicity, connection and harmony to all. Our fully-integrated information and resources strengthen quality of care, increase provider productivity, improve seniors’ quality of life, and offer families greater peace of mind regarding their loved ones.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?

The senior care industry is transforming and modernizing. With 27 years as an executive in software companies, and 10 years as a primary family caregiver for my older parents, I am excited to see – and be part of – the massive changes.

As an experienced software executive, I had a unique set of skills that gave me the chance to build something new. Something that could make a real difference in the senior care world, for both providers and for families of those in their care. The time I spent asking the right questions and discussing potential solutions with the right people ultimately led me to create what I believe to be the future of senior care. Serenity Engage can be the conduit to connecting families, caregivers, providers, and more.

I also started Mavericks of Senior Living, an international conversation about the challenges we face as an industry, the new innovation being released, and inspiring others to take action. Being the Chief Inspiration Officer at Mavericks of Senior Living has given me an opportunity to hear all sides of the problem, to hear others’ perceptions, opinions, and ideas, and to create lasting solutions for all. Mavericks of Senior Living is on a mission to create hope for the way we age.

Between my work with Serenity Engage and Mavericks of Senior Living, I hope to connect the formerly siloed stakeholders, including providers, care teams, older adults, and family members, across the entire senior care ecosystem.
